"I wish to be a published author"

“Today was an awesome, awesome day,” said Joshua’s mom, Colleen. “The community came out and supported. All the media outlets came out and supported us. We are really humbled by how people are rallying behind him and being supportive of our family.

He wished to be a published author, asking Make-A-Wish to bring Dash, a character he created as a little boy, to life through a book.

Joshua was diagnosed with cancer when he was 6 years old. His mom said reading and telling stories has helped him through some difficult times. “Joshua’s resilience and creativity have not only shaped his own story but also serve as an inspiration to others facing similar challenges,” reads the description of his book in the online marketplace where Dash is now sold.

On the day his wish came true, family, friends, current and former teachers, classmates, and community members met at Joshua’s local public library (one of his favorite places to visit) for a book release party! Joshua walked a blue carpet, signed copies of his book, and even read an excerpt.

We always thought wishes were only for kids who were terminal. The hospital was very clear in saying that a wish can be made for survivors, too, and that a wish could be a really positive thing. We didn’t want the wish to be frivolous, and that’s how he got to the book. Getting a wish and having an organization that’s focused on making a kid’s dream come true and focusing on the spirit of being kind, that’s just awesome, positive energy that’s out there.

“His book stands as a testament to the power of your dreams and how you can create something extraordinary by believing in yourself.” On top of Joshua’s big smile and imagination, he also has a big heart. He is sharing proceeds from the sale of his book with Make-A Wish.
